Brovia’s metodo classico weaves together three local varieties: Barbera (representing 60% of the blend), Nebbiolo (30%), and Freisa (10%). The Barbera which forms the backbone of the blend was sourced from a high-altitude site whose naturally lofty acidity allowed Alex and Elena to harvest at full phenolic maturity and still retain the brightness a great sparkling wine demands. The Nebbiolo and Freisa, from Brovia’s own vineyards, ground the wine in their specific zone’s expressive register; in fact, historically speaking, Langhe Freisa was a light and spritzy wine frequently prone to fermentation in bottle, and “Anterse” nods to that tradition in elegant fashion.

The debut 2019 vintage was disgorged in spring of 2024 after a lengthy 50-month stint on its fine lees and given a modest dosage of 2 grams per liter. Just like Brovia’s indomitable lineup of Barolo, “Anterse” is elegant, multilayered, precise, and refined, while still richly articulating a sense of place. Its level of vinosity is beautifully rendered: enough to imbue the wine with significant personality and to accompany cuisine, but in no way clunky or ponderous. As the first of its kind produced in the area, “Anterse” expands the notion of what metodo classico can be, and it will surely delight those Brovia faithful who lay claim to some of the miniscule quantity on its way to our shores.
