The ever-searching Olivier Jullien continues to discover new truths of his terroir even 40 years into his project, coercing heartrending expressiveness from his high-altitude holdings in the Languedoc’s renowned Terrasses du Larzac appellation. Hailing from what he called a “dream vintage,” Olivier’s 2024 Rosé consists primarily of Cinsault, with smaller amounts of Carignan and Mourvèdre, and tiny splashes of Tibouren, Sangiovese, Vermentino, and other obscure indigenous varieties planted throughout his holdings. Most of the blend was harvested specifically for rosé (i.e., earlier than for reds) and macerated for 24 hours, and the remaining smidgen was the saignée of bunches harvested for reds. Fermented and aged entirely in steel, this rosé skillfully straddles the line between vinosity and ease-of-use, showcasing both the mineral precision of this exciting appellation and Olivier’s peerless touch. September’s beautifully temperate weather gave Oliver the utmost flexibility at harvest time, allowing him to pick each variety and plot at its optimal level of maturity, and the result is a wine of incredible complexity and elegance on a very modest 12.5%-alcohol frame.
